Leyton Karate Club has been established for over 30 years. In the Juniors Class children (from 6 years old until 16) train every week to develop the skills and physical fitness to prepare them for the future.
The club follows the strict etiquette and rules of traditional karate and new students quickly learn to follow the rules and procedures.
As well as learning the basic techniques (the punches, blocks and kicks) they practice a form of sparring which is safe for kids. In the dojo they spar following the rules known as the ‘clicker’ system. Points are scored by being faster than, or outwitting, your opponent. Contact is minimal – a light touch to the body and no contact to the head with either punches or kicks.
Any students interested in progressing to a stronger form of controlled contact sparring train separately from the other juniors.
The BKK (British Karate Kyokushinkai) is our governing body. The BKK holds tournaments and training courses regularly which are open to all junior students above a certain grade.
All students learn katas (pre-arranged forms) which require a precise and accurate sequence of punches and blocks in a pre-arranged sequence.
Students who have reached the required level of proficiency in basic techniques and in kata have the opportunity to take a grading. Gradings are held several times a year, but not all students will be ready for their grading at the same time. One of the benefits of the grading system is every student gets the opportunity to receive a belt to mark the progress thry have made along the karate path. Some progress quickly. Some take longer. But every child has the chance to progress and develop if they follow the path set out by their instructor. And hopefully they will grow into a mature and respectful teenager and adult.
